Why I like...Zone Based Offenses

By Darrin Sheffer With Contributions by Coach Phil Vogt Website: thecoachvogt.com Twitter: @thecoachvogt http://thesportsquotient.com/nfl/2013/11/27/double-edged-sword-the-zone-blocking-scheme It's the new thing!  It's popular!  It's 21st Century Football!  It's never been done before!  It's... not really true.  If there is one overhanging theme in offensive football that I have learned it is that nothing is truly "new".  Everything, and I mean everything (yes, even RPO's) have been done before.  There is nothing truly new when it comes to football, everything you see being done today has been stolen from another coach or another time.  One case in particular: Zone Based Offenses. If you are a spread team, you probably have at least one, if not multiple plays that have Zone Blocking schemes.  Not just spread teams, many Flexbone, Wing-T, I formation and Pro Style offenses use some form of Zone Blocking schemes in their offensive syst

Unconventional Formation #2: Bruce Eien's "Stupid Sweep" Formation

By Darrin Sheffer With Contributions by Coach Bruce Eien http://bruceeien.com/ http://fatformation.blogspot.com/ Twitter: @bruceeien Before I get started with this blog I would like to say Thank You to Coach Eien for being so generous and kind enough to welcome me into the Single Wing community.  While I am a newbie when it comes to the Single Wing offense I am learning more and more every day and I am falling more and more in love with this offense the more I learn about it.  As someone who who is familiar with "Old School" offenses like the Flexbone and Wing-T, the Single Wing is an offense that rings many familiar bells, especially my love of Misdirection based offenses.  Once again, Thank You Coach Eien.   I love all offensive systems, but I have a special place in my heart for systems that are "different" and "unconventional".  I'm most familiar with traditional Wing-T, but when I have the power to call an offense at any level

Unconventional Formations #1: Coach Slade Singleton's X/Z Over Formation

By Darrin Sheffer With Contributions by Coach Slade Singleton Twitter: @slade248 Photo provided by Coach Slade Singleton Coach, is your offense... Boring?  Predictable?  Looking to add some spice to your offense?  I suggest you find yourself an Unconventional Formation.  Now understand that I'm not suggesting that you need to find a whole new offensive scheme, I'm just saying you should really be thinking of adding something new and something that not a lot of other coaches have the balls to do.  Some coaches may be afraid that adding something on top of what they already do will ruin their strategy.  What if I told you it didn't need to?  What if I told you that adding ONE unconventional formation won't be too expensive to teach?   I want to first thank Coach Slade Singleton Co Author/ Unlocking The Air Raid DNA (link below) for allowing me to write about one formation that he uses and I just freaking love, his X/Z Over Formation, or some may cal

Why Should Coaches Strive To Be Grey Jedi? (Scheme vs. Execution vs. Skill)

By Darrin Sheffer In honor of Star Wars coming out next week, I have chosen to "Use The Force" to help pull you away from the Light Side and Dark Side to become what is called a "Grey Jedi".  For those of you who are not Star Wars nerds hang with me, I promise I'm still talking about football.  For some background, everyone who has seen Star Wars, and even those who have not, you know what I mean when I say the Light Side and the Dark Side.  Good vs. Evil.  Right vs. Wrong.  Republican vs. Democrat.  You get the picture.  If you pay attention to the media you may get the image that you must "choose a side".  You are either Conservative or Liberal.  It's like this with more than just politics, but it is the most prominent example I can use.  What if I told you that you don't have to choose just one side?  What if I told you there is this amazing yet terrifying place called "The Grey Area"?   http://orig07.deviantart.net/eeb0
